We headed towards the National September 11 Memorial and found ourselves walking through the stunning new Oculus Building, the architecture's just amazing. We spend some time at the memorial, mainly in silence as it was the most emotional place I’ve ever been to. Memories of being on the top floor of one of the towers, taking photos with hubby - the night skyline in the background, and then just months later hearing and seeing on the news that the towers were attacked came rushing back, but it was surreal being back and those beautiful stately towers not being there anymore! It was really draining to face the sadness and loss that occurred here.
Next we made our way to Brooklyn Bridge and walked across to Brooklyn – had a snack in Brooklyn Bridge Park and made our way back to the City. We just couldn’t resist having some fun with the hats in the subway, lol. We then walked past the Flatiron Building (we are also John Wick fans) and we marveled at the very impressive architecture of this building.
Then it was time to visit the Empire State Building that always impresses, this time they had a really fun video playing in the elevator on the ceiling as we went up – it lasted a full 33 seconds – about the same time it takes for the elevator to go up all those storeys!
Luckily, we were able to enter the Chrysler Building (something we couldn’t do on our previous trip) and it is just opulent and grand. We walked over to the United Nations Buildings and were sad to see the park and grounds were all closed to the public. I loved the sculptures and cherry blossoms the last time we were here – given it was 16 years ago.
We ended our day with a pedicab through Central Park – we had a great driver and it was such fun sitting back with the refreshing cool breeze easing away the heat of the day. After the ride we decided it’s time for some food and everyone thought Applebee’s would be a great treat. We did get side-tracked on our way there by the DJI store, were Herzius impressed the staff with his intensive knowledge of their products and his drone flying skills.
Applebee’s was a treat and a great end to another long, exciting day in the Big Apple!
